Release
Archyv 1.8.0
This release makes Cancel work everywhere, speeds up saving metadata, and fixes a Metadata Editor problem where a field could be left out of a large batch.
Cancel works in every process
Cancel now stops every long-running step in every process, not just some of them.
- While files are being changed, Cancel stops between files. The files already changed stay changed and can still be undone from Undo History, and the completion screen tells you how far the run got, for example “Cancelled — 120 of 500”.
- While Archyv is only reading or checking files, Cancel stops the reading and changes nothing. You can press Start again straight away without refreshing.
- File Sort never leaves a photo with a temporary name behind when you cancel. It finishes the step that would otherwise leave names half-changed, then stops.
Saving metadata is much faster
Archyv now keeps its metadata tool running between files instead of starting it again for every photo it saves. Every process that writes metadata benefits. In our test on an Intel Mac, writing ten fields to each of 60 JPEG photos took about 0.015 seconds a photo instead of about 0.4 seconds.
Small selections get ready faster
“Reading files ahead” was as slow for a few dozen photos as for a thousand, because small selections were read one file at a time. Any selection of two or more files is now read in groups. In our test, 36 photos went from about 42 seconds to about 10 seconds.
Metadata Editor: your batch writes exactly what you set
On a large batch the editor stayed clickable while Archyv checked your files after Start, and a change made then, even an accidental click, could leave a field you had set out of the run while the report still said it succeeded. Archyv now takes a copy of everything you have set the moment you press Start, and that copy is what gets written. The editor dims and is locked from Start until writing begins, so nothing can change it in between. The same applies to the review screens in Species Tagging.
Copyright Notice is kept in step in sidecar files
Sidecar files can hold the copyright notice in two places. Changing or clearing Copyright Notice in the Metadata Editor now updates both, so an old notice no longer lingers in the second one. Canon CR3 files carry an empty copyright entry in the photo itself; that empty entry no longer hides the copyright kept in the photo’s sidecar file, so Scan & Select and renaming templates now find it.
Clearer progress
- “Verifying files N of M”. After File Sort, Manual Renaming, Metadata Renaming and Image Conversion finish their last file, Archyv records each changed file so it can be undone. That step now shows its own live count instead of a progress line that sat on the last file.
- File Sort shows real progress. It now counts its way through each stage, such as “Preparing new names”, instead of sitting on “Processing 0 of …” until the end.
- One Duration. The time shown on the completion screen and the time in the run log are now the same figure: the whole run, from Start to the completion screen.
- A cancelled run’s progress line no longer appears at the start of the next run.
Safer renaming and sorting
- Locked files are skipped up front. Renaming and File Sort now skip a locked file, or one in a folder Archyv can’t write to, before touching it, and the log says why. Previously this could leave a stray temporary copy behind.
- Previews warn you first. The Manual Renaming and Metadata Renaming previews now list a photo that will be skipped, with the reason. That includes a photo skipped for a missing value. A skipped photo no longer uses up a sequence number, so numbering stays continuous.
- No risk to the only copy in cloud folders. When renaming in a cloud folder, a final move that failed could delete the original. The original is now kept under its own name.
- File Sort keeps names intact. If a locked or unselected file already holds a name a group needs, that group goes back to its original names with a warning, rather than leaving a photo under a temporary name. When a photo’s original name has been taken, it is restored as “name (restored)”.
Smaller fixes
- Undo History shows “Loading this run’s files…” while it prepares a run, instead of briefly saying the run changed nothing. An open Undo History window now updates by itself as runs finish.
- Questions no longer hide behind other windows. When Archyv needs to ask you something, the Settings and Undo History windows close so the question is in view.
- Cleaner logs in standard mode. Technical debug lines no longer appear unless Verbose logging is on, while failure and skip reasons stay visible. A cancelled read-only step leaves a single clear “cancelled” line.
- File Transfer: a file that failed its after-copy check is now listed as failed with its reason, and Undo can return it.
- Folder Generation’s completion screen counts folders, not files.
- Species Tagging’s completion screen now asks you to refresh before the next run, like every other process that changes files.
- Photos held back by file protection are named and counted. In the Metadata Editor, Photographer Attribution, Image Conversion and Species Tagging, a photo that file protection keeps from being changed, such as a locked photo, now appears in the log by name with the reason, and is counted as skipped in the summary and on the completion screen.
- Undo History shows cancelled runs as “Cancelled”, instead of “Completed”, and the status column is now wide enough to show it in full.
- Duplicate Detection counts from the start. Its first stage now shows “Checking file details” with a count, and if you cancel there it reports how many photos it had checked.
- Metadata Renaming’s “Non-Matching Only” no longer skips photos for a missing photographer name when your template doesn’t use one. What a photo needs now depends only on the template you chose.
What to do: nothing. Install the update and work as usual.
