Archyv 1.8.1
This update fixes how Archyv reads copyright notices, makes Cancel reliable right after you press Start, and fixes saving metadata to files on network shares.
Copyright is read the same way everywhere
A photo can hold its copyright notice in several places. Archyv now reads all of them and shows the same notice everywhere.
- The Metadata Editor finds copyright notices it used to miss. That includes a notice kept only in a raw photo’s sidecar file in an older format, a video’s own built-in copyright field, and a PNG’s own copyright text. Field protection now keeps these from being overwritten, and Add mode no longer treats them as empty.
- Scan & Select and the {copyright} renaming tag now match the Metadata Editor. When a photo’s copies of the notice disagree, all of them show the notice the Metadata Editor shows. Before, they could show a different one.
- The rights summary counts more files. The summary you see before a run, and Image Conversion’s warning about removing rights information, now include photos whose copyright is kept only in XMP, either in the photo or in its sidecar file. This changes only what is reported. Photos with rights information are still processed as before.
Image Conversion keeps more of your metadata
- Copyright and other details stored only in XMP now carry over. When you convert with Preserve All or Strip GPS Only, details kept only in a photo’s XMP, or in a raw photo’s own .xmp sidecar file, are now copied to the converted file. Before, a copyright notice kept only there could be lost, even though the warning before the run said metadata would be preserved.
- Strip GPS Only removes every copy of the location. Location coordinates kept in XMP are now removed as well, including on JPEG files that are copied without re-encoding.
Cancel works from the instant you press Start
For a moment after you pressed Start or Proceed, the Cancel button had not appeared yet, and a click there did nothing while the run went ahead. Cancel is now available immediately, and an early click stops the run before any file is changed.
Network shares
- DNG files on a network share now save. A Metadata Editor batch to a network share could fail on every DNG file because the share reported the file as busy. Archyv now retries those saves in a way the share accepts.
- No leftover temporary files. If a network share disconnected while Archyv was saving, a temporary copy of the file could be left behind, and it blocked later saves of that file. Archyv now removes that copy when the original is intact. If the original might be damaged, Archyv keeps the copy and names it in the run log so you can recover your file.
Photographer Attribution
- A run with no name and no year changes nothing. Before, Replace with First Name, Last Name and Year all empty removed the existing photographer name from every selected file and reported success. Now Start stays unavailable in Add and Replace until you enter a name or a year. Entering only a year still sets the year and keeps existing names.
- Hover text on Add, Replace and Clear explains what each one does.
Smaller fixes
- HEIF image sequences. Sequences that include a cover image, such as those saved by Apple software, are now handled like any other HEIC photo. Photographer Attribution no longer skips them. Sequences that hold only frames have no place to store most metadata. Archyv now says so and skips them, where before it reported a save that never happened.
- Metadata Renaming’s “Non-Matching Only” now treats photos that already have CCPC-style names like any other photo. Such a photo is renamed when your template gives it a different name, and skipped only when its name already matches. Skipped photos are listed under Skipped in the run results.
- Undo History shows full process names such as “Photographer Attribution”, and its window opens wider.
What to do: nothing. Install the update and work as usual.
